Inspection of impact attenuating playground surfacing in compliance with the European Standard EN 1177

A large percentage of accidents in playgrounds are due to falls. Protection against falling is a key concern of the standard EN 1176-1. The surface of the impact area, as well as the materials used for impact attenuation, must be inspected. Such materials include sand, gravel, and bark (loose materials), which are commonly used materials listed in Table 4 of the EN 1176-1:2008, as well as rubber tiles or poured rubber surfacing (synthetic materials). According to Ministerial Decision 28492/2009, as well as its amendment 27934/2014, the fall surfaces in playgrounds must meet with the specifications of the EN 1176-1 and EN 1177 standards. The critical fall height of the impact-attenuating surface should be greater than the free fall height of the installed equipment. Throughout the entire impact area, there must be a layer of impact-attenuating material. For loose materials without clay particles, the size of the grains can be determined through a sieve analysis according to EN 933-1.
